I-80 at US 30 Interchange Reconstruction Complete

The I-80 at US 30 Interchange reconstruction is complete and open to traffic. Interstate 80 (I-80) is one of three coast-to-coast interstates that supports the movement of approximately 80,000 vehicles each day in Illinois. Congestion at the interchange of I-80 and US 30 was commonplace due to capacity restraints and frequent merging and weaving. To address these safety and capacity deficiencies at the interchange, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) selected Ciorba Group to prepare design plans and specifications for the reconstruction of the I-80 at US 30 interchange. The interchange project is the gateway to the reconstruction of I-80 to the west, the cornerstone project of the newly approved Rebuild Illinois program.

Work at the interchange involved reconstructing and re-aligning all ramps to meet current geometric standards. Reconstructing and widening the I-80 mainline pavement to three lanes from Gougar Road to US 30 provided much needed capacity improvements. The US 30 roadway was also reconstructed and widened to create the new intersections with the re-aligned interchange ramps and provide auxiliary lanes on US 30.

The project also included replacing, widening and changing the layout of the dual curved bridges carrying I-80 over US 30, the Metra Rock Island District Line, and Hickory Creek; traffic signals modernization; new high mast lighting installation; and several improvements to the existing drainage system, including in-line detention via oversized pipes for the I-80 mainline system and wetland detention basins. As part of this improvement, Ciorba Group also designed the new two-span pedestrian bridge that carries the Will County Forest Preserve Old Plank Trail over I-80.
