Roselle Road Pedestrian Bridge

2020 SEAOI Excellence in Structural Engineering Best Project up to $10 Million Award

This new pedestrian bridge designed by Ciorba Group for the Village of Schaumburg is the recipient of the 2020 SEAOI Excellence in Structural Engineering Best Project up to $10 Million Award. The bridge is part of a new multi-use trail that goes along Roselle Road at the I-90 interchange and crosses Central Road and a tributary of Salt Creek.

The bridge features a curved horizontal alignment with a structurally optimized two-girder system that has a slender, appealing look. The new trail and bridge carry the users over a major intersection and through the tree canopy of the Paul Douglas Forest Preserve. Ciorba Group and the Village of Schaumburg coordinated the project with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Cook County Forest Preserves and the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways and identified design criteria that limited environmental impacts.

To make this trail more attractive to pedestrians and bicyclists, the project aesthetic treatments include form liners at walls and piers, a bridge overlook, special pedestrian railings and signages, and a choice of colors, materials and finishes that follows a theme inspired by adjacent facilities and blends well with the surrounding environment.

We thank SEAOI for selecting the project as a finalist and the judges for their positive comments and for honoring Ciorba Group with this prestigious award.
