CIORBA SPOTLIGHTJingyun Sun, PE

Ciorba Spotlight is our News series in which we get a chance to interview some of the members of the Ciorba team and learn about their careers, projects, and hobbies.  Today we highlight Jingyun Sun, a key member of Ciorba’s Water Resources team with a passion for engineering and problem solving.

Jingyun Sun, PE - Water Resources Engineer

Jingyun Sun, PE (Sun) | Ciorba Group

Jingyun Sun, PE (Sun) is a Water Resources Engineer who was born and raised in Tianchang, Anhui, China. After graduating from high school, she moved to the States to study Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa. After graduation, she moved to Chicago to work with Ciorba and quickly became an integral part of the Water Resources group.

Sun’s love for water resources engineering started back in China, where she learned early on that the environment is a very hot topic. “I decided to study civil and environmental engineering because as everyone knows water is a valuable and very limited resource in the planet. Nowadays floods are becoming more serious due to the increasing urban development in the world. I want to help to manage this problem and help make better use of this important resource as well as improve humans’ living quality”

Sun’s favorite part about being an Engineer is to have the privilege of showing off her work to others “when I pass by a project I worked on, I can show them what I did there, and how my work improves other people’s lives in a positive way”. Another perk of being an engineer for Sun is to work on projects that challenge her problem-solving skills, like the Squirrel Creek Improvements project which is a combination of stream restoration and culvert replacements in South Haven, Indiana. “I have never worked on a project like this. It is very challenging but exciting at the same time”

On an average day at Ciorba, our team works hard to build up synergy and maintain a positive environment. This positivism is created thanks to people like Sun, who on every project regardless of how big or small, always works as a team player. “I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by this intelligent and hardworking group of people, I’m very proud and happy to be part of the Ciorba team”

One piece of advice that Sun would like to share with young and senior engineers alike is “keep learning, you must keep up with the new regulations, and adapt easily to new technology if you want to succeed in this field, it is a must.”

We hope you enjoyed reading about Sun who told us that she would name her autobiography The Sun. “I go by Sun, so I hope my life can be as bright as the sun and shine to other people too, bringing energy and joy.”
