Skokie Swift Transportation Center Improvement

Ciorba Group completed the preliminary and final design for improvements to the existing commuter parking lot located on Dempster Street, an unmarked State highway. The commuter lot serves patrons of the Skokie Swift rapid transit line as well as CTA and Pace buses.

Inadequate traffic flow patterns and conflicts between buses and commuter vehicles using the existing parking lot was a major concern to the Village. Several alternate conceptual designs were evaluated to determine the most efficient use of space to provide the required services, improve traffic flow and reduce conflicting movements between buses and automobiles. The final proposed geometric plan involved relocating the existing parking lot entrance along Dempster Street. A warrant study identified the need for a traffic signal at the new parking lot entrance/Dempster Street intersection. An intersection design study was prepared for this new signalized intersection and submitted to IDOT’s Bureau of Traffic for review and approval.
