Ciorba Group performed preliminary engineering and final design for the reconstruction of the three-span bridge carrying southbound Lake Shore Drive over 47th Street in Burnham Park. Ciorba also developed roadway improvements to Lake Shore Drive and the exit and entrance ramps to 47th Street.
The new bridge is a steel plate girder structure that incorporates various architectural features—including decorative abutment walls and Art Deco lighting fixtures. The exterior beams are shielded from view by a precast concrete decorative fascia.
Because of the potential architectural and historic importance of the structure as it relates to Burnham Park, we conducted a special aesthetic study, and our design included special structural and architectural details.
