Ciorba Group prepared the designs for an underpass structure at Rollins Road to connect two existing segments of a multi-use path part of the Millennium Trail. The project included 1,200 feet of paved trail. The alignment utilized horizontal curves to avoid the removal of preferred trees and wetland impacts while meeting ADA standards. The 120-foot long underpass is a cast in place concrete structure 18 feet wide and 10 feet high and was stage constructed in open excavation. The tunnel included aesthetic treatments at each end created by the use of form liners and wall mounted lighting fixtures. The scope of work included installation of a new timber railing and deck repair to an existing bridge over Mill Creek with the project limit. Construction was funded through the federal ITEP program. The project was reviewed by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the FHWA. The project received the 2015 Honor Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Illinois for Small Structures.
