January 2012

 

Ciorba Group is part of the team providing design engineering services for the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to reconstruct and widen the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) from IL 53 to Higgins Road. The estimated cost of the improvement is over $200 million


December 2011

 

Ciorba has been selected by the Chicago Department of Transportation to provide design engineering services for the $20 million reconstruction of Lake Street from Ashland Avenue to Halsted Street. A new typical section is proposed for the area to improve access for local businesses. Work will include total pavement construction, four new interconnected traffic signals, new street lighting and providing minor streetscaping elements.

Congratulations to Bob Rado and Kyle Johnson for passing their Illinois Professional Engineer exams. Bob is now an Illinois-registered Professional Engineer while Kyle will become one upon completion of the required four years of professional experience


November 2011

 

Ciorba Group has been selected by Lake County Division of Transportation to provide construction observation services for the reconstruction of Delany Road from York House Road to Wadsworth Road. This $20 million project will be completed in late 2013/early 2014.


October 2011

 

Ciorba Group has been selected by the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to reconstruct and widening the two structures carrying the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) over the Kishwaukee River in Winnebago County. Replacing the 500 foot-long structures is part of the Tollway's plans to widen and reconstruct I-90 from Chicago to Rockford.  

Ciorba Group has been selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation to perform Phase I studies for various projects located throughout Region One.


September 2011

 

Ciorba has expanded our Structural prequalification with IDOT to include Steel Girder Bridge, Tied Arch Bridge, Continuous/Cantilever Truss Bridge and Railroad Bridges categories.  

Water Resources Manager Tony Wolff delivered a Stormwater Presentation with the Conservation Foundation on September 29th.  

Structural Engineer David Liu delivered a presentation on foundation types for the ASCE Illinois September 21 dinner meeting.  

Congratulations to Jennifer Grazier and Eric Spina for successfully passing the Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII) exam. This certification requires hard work, determination and extensive knowledge of their field.  

Executive Vice President Salvatore Di Bernardo was elected a Director to the US Group of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). He is also a Fellow of the Association. This month at the IABSE's annual conference in London, Salvatore gave a presentation on 'Structural Performance Safety and Analysis' to one of their technical committees. The presentation is precursor to Salvatore eventually joining the committee.

Congratulations to Kyle Johnson and Larry Brenner who were both recently certified as Designated Erosion Control Inspectors (DECIs) by the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC).

Senior Structural Engineer Brett Sauter's article Inspecting Our Infrastructure was published on the front page of American Society of Civil Engineers Illinois Section's May-June 2011 Newsletter. Brett served as the Head Team Leader on an Illinois Department of Transportation contract for the inspection of four major river bridges spanning the Illinois River and the Mississippi River. Congratulations, Brett! You can read his article here.  

Ciorba Group is pleased to announce the appointment of David Liu, PhD, PE, SE to the position of Structural Manager. David Liu will oversee preliminary and design engineering services for Ciorba Group's structural projects. He has over 22 years of experience on steel I-girder, steel box girder, steel truss and prestressed and posttensioned concrete bridges. David has also played a key design role for long-span steel plate girder and suspension bridges. Dr. Liu earned a Bachelor and Master degrees from South China University of Technology and a PhD from Clarkson University. As an author, David has written over 26 technical papers for publications, conferences and seminars. He is a licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois and a licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Georgia and Pennsylvania.  

Ciorba Group is pleased to announce the appointment of Duane O'Laughlin, PE to the position of Transportation Manager. Duane O'Laughlin will help oversee Ciorba's Transportation Group, focusing primarily on managing preliminary and design engineering services for state, county and municipal agencies. Duane comes to Ciorba Group with 26 years of experience in the study, design and construction of public infrastructure improvements. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he is a licensed Engineer in Illinois, Iowa and Virginia and holds both a Master's and Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Duane is a member of APWA, the Active Transportation Alliance (formerly known as the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation) and the League of Illinois Bicyclists. Duane is an avid cyclist who bikes for commuting, errands and recreation.

Congratulations to Senior Water Resources Engineer Dayne Morris for receiving his certification in floodplain management and to Resident Engineer Jeff Garth for receiving his certification as a Public Infrastructure Inspector. Ciorba Group also congratulates Water Resources Engineer Alexander Lau for becoming an Illinois-licensed Professional Engineer in 2010.

Ciorba Group was awarded two awards for the recently completed Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Infrastructure Improvements project in the City of North Chicago: 2010 Merit Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois and 2010 Best Transportation Project Award from the American Public Works Association (Lake Branch Chicago Chapter).

Ciorba Group has been selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation District One to perform in-depth bridge inspections for the IL 50 over Cal-Sag Channel Bridge as part of the rehabilitation project.


April 2010

 

Ciorba has been selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation District Two for the preparation of final plans for the reconstruction and widening of IL 5.

 

Ciorba Group has completed final design plans for the rehabilitation of the I-94 Edens Spur for the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. The scope of work for this face-paced project includes resurfacing and pavement patching, embankment stabilization and ITS. The project cost is estimated at $20 million.


March 2010

 

Ciorba Group has been selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridges and Structures for the inspection of four major bridges: one truss bridge and one steel plate girder bridge over the Mississippi River, and two truss bridges over the Illinois River.

 

Ciorba Group is currently completing Phase I engineering services on the Project Development Report for the improvements to IL Route 171 from 47th Street to 55th Street for the Illinois Department of Transportation District One/Region One. The majority of the roadway is located on 20 bridges including crossings of the Des Plaines River and the Ship and Sanitary Canal. Ciorba’s main services consisted of bridge inspections and preparation and Bridge Condition reports for each structure, evaluation of the roadway geometry, crash analysis, drainage studies and hydraulic reports.

Ciorba Group has welcomed Tony Wolff, PE, CFM to our team as the firm’s new Water Resources Manager. Tony comes to Ciorba Group after serving the last three years as Chief Engineer for the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission. He will be overseeing our Water Resources Group, and help expand Ciorba’s water resource capabilities into a primary function of the company. He has over 18 years of experience in water resource engineering and is a licensed Engineer in both Illinois and Wisconsin as well as a Certified Floodplain Manager in Illinois. Along with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, Tony has a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from Northwestern University.

Ciorba Group employees donated $1,785.00 to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund, which Ciorba matched, bringing the total donation to $3,570.
